FAQ
Do you offer any discounts?
Yes. We have a family discount, teacher discount, service member discount, & university student discount.
Do I have to commit for a certain length of time?
We would never tie you into a contract. Our memberships are month-to-month, allowing you to come and go as you please.
Do I have to join at a specific time?
No. We work on a rolling enrollment instead of sessions, so you can hop in at any time!
Are there additional costs?
Belt testing is an additional cost to be aware of. This depends on how often you come to class and how well you know the curriculum. Students can expect the following:
Karate Tots & Little Dragons (ages 3-6): every week you come to class, you’ll get a stripe on your belt. After 8 stripes, you’re ready to test! This will be $25
.
Youth & Adult Karate (ages 7+): the time between these tests varies by belt. Starting at 12 weeks and increasing by belt level. Students will become eligible for a new belt once the time requirement is met and the knowledge of
the curriculum is deemed sound by the instructor. These tests range from $60-75 up to purple belt. Once a student reaches a brown belt, they become more serious about karate, and pricing goes up from there.
Jiu-Jitsu (ages 7+): practitioners rank up with stripes on their belts. Once they hit the fourth stripe, a new belt is issued. Stripes are free, but the test for a new belt is special. This costs $75. The time between full belts in jiu-jitsu is longer than karate, so practitioners can expect this charge anywhere from a year to ten years between belts depending on the level.
Is the membership for karate only?
No! When you buy a membership, you’re paying to enjoy all of the classes Fonseca Martial Arts offers to its members. So if you want to try karate, kobudō, or jiu-jitsu, we think you should be able to do just that.
What’s a Competition Upgrade?
This upgrade allows students who are serious about karate competition to participate in our Competition level karate track. This is not recommended for students just starting out in the program. Although we do let beginner students participate, we recommend that you try a couple of competitions first before joining the Competition program.
What about the outfit and equipment?
The outfit, or the gi (pron: ghee), is available at our dojos for purchase.
Equipment like gloves, shin guards, mouth guards, and specialty gis are available for purchase at our dojos or on our online store.
What’s your hold policy?
If you would like to place your membership on hold, you may do so for up to three (3) months. Clients may hold up to six (6) months for medical reasons. For each month of the hold, the member will pay a $25 hold fee. This hold fee acts as a deposit, and will be applied to the first month’s membership upon return. Hold fees guarantee the client the same rate of membership as they had before the hold was placed. Hold fees will not be refunded should the client decide to ultimately cancel.
What’s your cancellation policy?
We don’t tie anyone into contracts, and our members may cancel at any time. Canceling your membership is as easy as three steps:
1. Membership cancellation requests must be provided to FMA by the member in writing, including date, name, and reason for the request. Requests should be sent directly to info@fonsecamartialarts.com at least 48 hours prior to your
next billing date.
2. A representative will follow up with your request by phone or email, and will document any communication regarding the request. If you have not received confirmation of the cancellation within three business days, please reach out again to info@fonsecamartialarts.com or call 847-866-0200 to verify the original request was received.
3. It is the responsibility of the member to submit cancellation requests prior to the monthly auto bill date. FMA will not issue partial or full credit card refunds once the account has been billed the monthly membership fee. In some cases where an entire month or more of membership has not been used, FMA may grant a maximum of one month’s store credit for future purchases.
Once a member cancels their membership, they are subject to any rate increase that may occur during their absence. FMA will not honor previous rates if a member has cancelled and returned after a scheduled rate increase.
